52 Ancestors – Week 3 “Nickname”

My maternal great grandmother, Geraldine (Kelley) Miles was known as Grandma “Mouse.” One of her great grandchildren pronounced Miles as Mouse and the name stuck. She passed away when I was just in elementary school but some of my favorite memories are visiting her near Brooksville, Florida and going to the Pine Island beach. Back in the day, the beach was lesser known to the tourists. It reminds me of “old Florida” with no parking lot or restrooms, just white sand and sea.
Geraldine and her twin sister made local headlines in 1907 when she and her twin sister were abandoned by their biological mother at the Butler Poor House (Butler, Pa) as infants. She was adopted by a kind couple, Leo David and Margaret (Royle) Kelley of Butler. Below is a family photo of Geraldine with her adopted parents. Unfortunately, the photo is in poor condition.
